There are at least two important guides for records collector:
RARE RECORD PRICE GUIDE published by the well known english review Record Collector and
GOLDMINE PRICE GUIDE TO COLLECTIBLE RECORD ALBUM.
The first one is specialized in records printed in UK, the second one in records printed in USA.
Both guides are useful not for the quotations but for the labels descriptions. It is not necessary to get the most recent ones just because the labels didn't change. On the new editions we can find at least some interesting update or some 'new entry' ignored in the past.
GOLDMINE is published by Krause Publications - 700 E. State Street - IOLA WI 54990-0001 - USA
RARE RECORDS PRICE GUIDE is published by Record Collector - 43/45 St. Mary's Road - EALING, LONDON - W5 5RQ - UK.
To find out one copy of RR isn't difficult because you can order it directly at Record Collector, the most competent review talking about collectible records and it's easy to see it at the Records Fairs. Less easy for Goldmine, but both can be found in the web at Amazon or Ebay.
Another very useful guide, full of discographies and lines up is: ROCK RECORD written by Terry Hounsome. This is the seventh edition.
More interesting guides, overall about artists and groups are:
FUZZ ACID AND FLOWERS -for the USA artists (1964 - 1975 ).
THE TAPESTRY OF DELIGHT - for the UK artists (1963 - 1976).
DREAMS, FANTASIES AND NIGHTMARES FROM FAR AWAY LANDS - for the Australian and South American artists (1963 - 1975).
Written by Vernon Joynson and published by BORDERLINE PRODUCTIONS - P.O. BOX 3819 - GLASGOW - G43 1 UT - UK.
Borderline also published two valuable book written by Dag Erik Asbjornsen: COSMIC DREAM AT PLAY - A Guide to German Progressive and Electronic Rock - about the progressive rock in Germany, including discographies and reviews - and SCENTED GARDENS OF THE MIND: A Comprehensive Guide to the Golden Era of Progressive Rock: 1968-1980 dedicated to the Prog Rock of the rest of the Europe.
The most important guides printed in France are: LA DISCOGRAPHIE DU ROCK FRANÇAIS written by Francis Grosse and Bernard Gueffier published by: Musea - 138, Rue de Vallières - 57070 METZ - FRANCE- and LE ROCK PSYCHEDELIQUE AMERICAIN 1966-1973 - printed in two volumes by Èditions Paralleles - 47, Rue Saint - Honoré - 75001 PARIS - FRANCE.
For the European Rock in general, we can't forget two guides printed at the end ot the eighties by the japanese Marquee's:
ENCYCLOPEDIA OF EUROPEAN-ROCK - 1966-1987 and ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BRITISH ROCK. The first volume describes the european artists discographies, with the lines up and some pics of the era taken by the well known italian review Ciao 2001. Unfortunately comments are written in japanese. Very competent book that mentions Janus (Al Maestrale) in the italian groups discography, Flute & Voice (Imaginations of Light) in the german one and Book of AM in the France one.
The second volume it's about the English Rock and the covers records pics are in full colors like the pics of the groups. The authors mentions Michael Nyman with Zakarrias in the progressive section: probably when they came in Europe to empty the records shops, they paid all the same price :-)
Anyway they are two very good books.
For the lovers of the family trees the right guide is The Complete Rock Family Trees printed by Omnibus Press and distribuited by Book Sales Limited - 8/9 Fifth Street - LONDON W1V 5TZ - ENGLAND.
In South America also there were some rock bands that recorded nice psychedelic and progressive rock records and THE MAGIC LAND, written by Marcelo Camerlo it's a very useful guide to know something more about argentinan and uruguayan bands. This book was distribuited in Europe by: A. Asppan S.L. - Dr. Ramón Castroviejo, 63, Local - 28035 MADRID - SPAIN.
Jean Jobses wrote about the private dutch labels in his A MUSICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF DUTCH PRIVATE PRESSING that you can request directly to the author: Postbus 202 - NL 6290 AE VAALS - NETHERLANDS.
In Italy many books was printed about rock music and Celononcelo likes:
Enciclopedia Pop by Mauro Radice, issued in the 1976 by Celuc Libri - Via Santa Valeria, 5, 20123 MILANO. Probably the first italian underground encyclopedia of rock.
Il ritorno del Pop italiano by Paolo Barotto, reiussued and upgraded recently and easy to find.
Rock Progressivo Inglese by Giancarlo Nanni, published in the 1998 by Castelvecchi Edizioni, very good not only for the records collectors but also for the rock music lovers.
Il Pop & Progressive in Italia by Valentino Flesca, full of pictures color of the records covers and an accurate discography. Unfortunately it's a limited edition and there are not references helping for request it.
Enciclopedia del Rock Italiano by Cesare Rizzi, published in 1993 by Arcana, with many forms shared by decade . It contains the insert Piccolo dizionario delle cover del bitt about the beat songs covered by italian groups.
Enciclopedia del Rock Psichedelico by Cesare Rizzi for the section 'Psichedelia anni '60 and by Claudio Sorge for the 80s. Published by Arcana in 1986.
